The TENDED MIND
Where this framework comes from, and how it compares.
The Tended Mind's syllabus isn't built on intuition alone. It's grounded in established research on how children develop emotionally and socially, and shaped in direct response to what's already being taught, and what's missing, in existing global education systems. This page sets out both: the evidence base, and the comparison.
How Existing Systems Address This
Most major global curricula were not built with emotional and social development as a core, assessed pillar. Some address it partially, as an adjacent programme rather than an integrated one. It's worth being fair about what each already does well, and honest about the gap that remains.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
The IB's Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity, Service components go further than most systems toward reflective and values-based learning. But these sit alongside the core academic diploma, not woven through it as a progressive, stage-by-stage curriculum in their own right.
GCSE and A-Level
The UK's GCSE and A-Level system is similarly subject and examination-focused. PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) exists as a parallel requirement in UK schools, but is often inconsistently resourced and rarely built with the same structural rigour as examined subjects.
Cambridge International
Cambridge's qualifications are built primarily around academic rigour and subject depth, widely respected for that strength. Emotional and social development isn't a structured, assessed part of the curriculum itself.
TNSB (Samacheer Kalvi)
Tamil Nadu runs its own curriculum, set by SCERT Tamil Nadu and delivered through Samacheer Kalvi textbooks, independent of central policy. Its own reforms have moved deliberately away from rote learning toward life skills, self-awareness and value-based education, most recently in the new Classes 1-3 syllabus for 2026-27. That state-led direction creates a genuine opening for a structured framework like this one.
Advanced Placement (AP)
AP is a subject-based, exam-focused system, built for depth in specific academic disciplines. It doesn't include a formal social-emotional learning component.
Finland's National Curriculum
Finland is frequently cited internationally for its emphasis on wellbeing and lower-pressure assessment, and it offers a genuinely useful reference point. Its approach is embedded in broader pedagogical philosophy and national culture, rather than delivered as a discrete, exportable curriculum framework other systems can directly adopt.
What this comparison shows: most systems either treat emotional and social development as a secondary, non-assessed add-on, or embed it so deeply in local culture and teacher practice that it isn't a structured, transferable curriculum. The Tended Mind's Twelve Domains are built to be the thing that's largely missing: a stage-by-stage, standalone, teachable framework, not an add-on and not a cultural assumption.
The Evidence Base
World Health Organization
As of WHO's most recent fact sheet (September 2025), one in seven 10-19-year-olds worldwide experiences a mental disorder, accounting for 15% of the global burden of disease in this age group. WHO identifies depression, anxiety, and behavioural disorders among the leading causes of illness and disability in adolescents, and notes that half of all adult mental health conditions begin by age 18, most going undetected and untreated.
World Economic Forum
The WEF's Future of Jobs Report 2025, drawn from a survey of over 1,000 employers representing more than 14 million workers across 55 economies, found analytical thinking to be the single most valued core skill, considered essential by 7 in 10 companies. Resilience, flexibility and agility, along with empathy and active listening, feature prominently among the top ten, alongside technical and cognitive skills, not instead of them. 63% of employers identify skills gaps as the single biggest barrier to workforce transformation over the next five years.
OECD Survey on Social and Emotional Skills (SSES) 2023
The OECD's SSES 2023 is the largest international survey of its kind, assessing social and emotional skills among 10- and 15-year-old students across 16 sites worldwide, including Delhi, India, and Dubai, UAE, among its participating locations. The survey found these skills are linked to meaningfully better life outcomes: greater academic success, higher life satisfaction, healthier behaviours, lower test and class anxiety, and more ambitious career plans, while also finding these skills are unevenly distributed by age, gender, and socioeconomic background.
CASEL
A widely cited meta-analysis of school-based social and emotional learning programmes, published in Child Development and hosted by CASEL (Durlak et al., 2011), found that students participating in SEL programmes showed an 11-percentile-point gain in academic achievement compared to peers who did not. CASEL's five core competencies, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making, form the structural basis The Tended Mind's Twelve Domains build on and extend.
Yale's RULER Approach
Yale's RULER approach to emotional literacy, Recognising, Understanding, Labelling, Expressing, and Regulating emotion, informs how The Tended Mind approaches the Emotion domain specifically, treating emotional vocabulary as a skill to be taught deliberately, not assumed.
Rooted in Something Older
Alongside this contemporary research base, The Tended Mind draws on a Tamil ethical tradition over two thousand years old. Anbu and Arivu were named and honoured in Tamil thought long before modern psychology gave them their current vocabulary. This isn't decoration. It's a genuine second foundation, alongside the contemporary evidence, for why this framework holds together.
